City explores new routes for river tourism

HCMC – The HCMC tourism authority will survey a new tourist route upstream the Saigon River to the neighboring province of Dong Nai early next month as the city government on Monday gave approval, an official said.

Nguyen Viet Anh, head of the Travel Division of the city’s Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism said the city’s vice chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Hong, had allowed the department to undertake the survey following a meeting on Monday about a plan to explore some river tourist routes to develop this kind of tourism for the city.

Officials at Monday’s meeting also discussed the possibility of opening another river tour linking the city’s center, neighboring Binh Duong Province, and Cu Chi District in the city’s outskirts.

A report prepared by the tourism department after a survey in July shows that this medium-length river tour is of high potential owing to the beautiful scenery and attractions along the route.

The route should start from Bach Dang Wharf, take in Thanh Da-Binh Quoi and then Binh Duong Province’s craft villages before ending in the historical Cu Chi Tunnels.

But at Monday’s meeting, some expressed concern that this tourist route could hardly be launched later this year as had been expected due to the lack of required infrastructure facilities.

La Quoc Khanh, deputy director of the tourism department, told the meeting that there were not enough berths along the route for boats to anchor, let alone the mobilization of other transport means along the route to cater to tourists.

Khanh also complained that several bridges along the route had a low vertical clearance, preventing bigger boats from navigating underneath.

So far, the tourism department and some tour operators have surveyed a short route from Bach Dang Wharf in District 1 to District 7. “We will launch this tourism product by the year-end or early next year,” Anh of the city’s tourism department said.

The city is pining high hopes on river tourism as strong potential of the industry, which once brought into play will also help linking attractions in the city with those in other provinces.

The city government has asked the tourism authority to draft an action plan this year to develop a river tour taking tourists from HCMC to attractions in the city and to other places such as the Mekong Delta province of An Giang and Cambodia.

At Monday’s meeting, vice chairwoman Hong also agreed in principle to assign Saigontourist Holding Company to build a tourist wharf in District 1. Earlier, Hong also gave the company the go-ahead to build a tourism wharf in Nha Be District.

Hanoi breaks ground for urban railroad route

Ground has been broken in Hanoi’s Tu Liem District for the section of Nhon-Hanoi railway station, the capital’s 3rd suburban route.

The 12.5-kilometer route, which will pass through densely populated areas of the capital like the districts of Hoan Kiem, Dong Da, Ba Dinh, and Cau Giay, will meet the burgeoning transport needs of suburban dwellers, encouraging them to use public instead of private transport.

It will take 20 minutes to cover the distance including the time taken for ticketing procedures.

The route will also be linked with other rail and bus routes.

It will have a capacity of 900-1,200 and travel at a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

There will be four stations in the four-kilometer underground section.

The main depot will be built on a 15.5-hectare area on the road leading to the Hanoi University of Industry.

The VND18 trillion (US$925.5 million) project, funded partly by foreign loans and, will use European underground construction technology, while the tunnels will be built using prefabricated concrete blocks that will not harm houses in the vicinity, Nguy Nhu Nguyen, the head of the project, said.

It is expected to be operational by 2015.

The first train route in Hanoi will run between Ngoc Hoi in the northeast and Nhu Quynh the south, passing through Yen Vien and other downtown areas.

The second, from Noi Bai to Thuong Dinh through the downtown area, will be the most vital route.

The fourth will run between Dong Anh and Me Linh, connecting other urban railway development projects.

The fifth will run between the southern part of West Lake to Lang-Hoa Lac to connect downtown with areas located along the Lang-Hoa Lac corridor.

Hanoi to start urban railway construction

Construction will begin on Sept. 22 on a pilot urban railway, running from Nhon in Tu Liem District to Hanoi Railway Station, as part of a largest ever public transport project in Hanoi, said Head of the municipal People’s Committee’s Office Nguyen Thinh Thanh.

The municipal People’s Committee requested Tu Liem District to finalize preparations, especially site clearance for the project before Sept. 16.

Under the plan till 2020, Hanoi will have five urban railway routes, linking the inner city with nearby urban centers of Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Hung Yen and Thai Nguyen.

The Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station, the third route of the plan, has a total length of 12 kilometers, connecting the city’s west part to the downtown and the southern part.

The first route will run between Ngoc Hoi, Yen Vien and Nhu Quynh. It will link areas located in the northeast and the south of Hanoi with downtown.

The second route, Noi Bai-downtown-Thuong Dinh, is the backbone of the urban area at the present and in the future. It will connect with the railway route from Cat Linh, Hanoi to Ba La, Ha Dong.

The fourth route will run between Dong Anh, Sai Dong, Vinh Tuy, Thanh Xuan, Tu Liem, Thuong Cat and Me Linh. This route will connect urban development projects.

The fifth route will run between the southern part of West Lake, Ngoc Khanh and Lang-Hoa Lac to connect the downtown with urban areas located along Lang-Hoa Lac corridor.

Hanoi to start urban railway construction

Construction will begin on Sept. 22 on a pilot urban railway, running

Work begins on HCMC 2nd metro route

Construction of a technical maintenance station for Ho Chi Minh City’s metro No 2 began yesterday at Tham Luong in District 12.

The US$1.24 billion Ben Thanh Market – Tham Luong route is expected to be finished in 2016 to become the nation’s first modern mass transit system.

The 19-kilometer system will be funded by loans from German development bank KfW Bankengruppe, the Asian Development Bank, and the European Investment Bank.

Later the route will be expanded beyond the Saigon River to Thu Thiem in District 2 and at the other end to An Suong also in District 12.

It will pass through Districts 12, Tan Phu, Tan Binh, 1, 3, and 2.

The underground system will carry 40,000 passengers an hour, covering the route in around 25 minutes. Commuters will have to pay a flat fare of VND3000.

It will have 10 underground and one elevated stations that will be disabled-friendly.

Work on the route is expected to begin in the next two years using new underground construction technologies that will make it unnecessary to block roads above, Nguyen Van Quoc of the Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways said (MAUR).

Since the average depth of the metro will be 18 meters -- and 34 meters at the deepest point -- it will not have any impact on buildings and skyscrapers along the route, he added.

The city, which has a population of eight million that could rise to over 10 million soon, plans to build six metro and two monorail routes and a tramway and has identified funding for almost all of them.

A 12.5-kilometer tram route from Bach Dang Pier in District 1 to Mien Tay Coach Station in Binh Tan District has been awarded to Thanh Danh Co and the Malaysia-based Titanium Management.

But city authorities appraised their bid and have asked them to scale down the amount of VND4.2 trillion ($215.7 million). As a result, work on the project cannot start this month as scheduled, Thoi Bao Kinh Te Sai Gon Online (The Saigon Economics Times Online) newspaper quoted Nguyen Do Luong, head of the MAUR, as saying.

If they fail to reach agreement, their license will be revoked, Luong said.

Thai, Chinese, and Czech investors are seeking approval to build metro Nos 3a, 3b, and 4. The Ministry of Construction-run Development Investment Construction Joint Stock Corp and Dat Phuong Joint Stock Co have bid for the monorail No 2 project.
